How to keep your drain smelling fresh and clean
(And save money by not having to call us!)

No one likes to stand over their sink, and have their nose hijack them to the local trash dump. Or how about washing your face in the bathroom sink while a stench hits you face first? Now, if what you smile on the outside doesn’t make you want to have a party, imagine what’s going on inside your pipes. Something that doesn’t belong in your pipe will be a conspirator in clogging your pipe.

So what do you do? Well, remember that most drain blockages occur because someone put something into the drain that did not belong there in the first place. Usually it starts out as a liquid, but solidified once it reaches the trap. There are some things you can do to
keep your drains smelling fresh and clean.

1. Throw large pieces of uneaten food in the trash.
2. Create a compost pile for vegetable and fruit scraps (makes great soil for flowers).
3. Never, ever (did I say, “Never”?) pour oil or grease down the drain.

In the bathroom, do your best to keep hair out of the drains. After a shower, pick up any hairs and throw them in the trash. Soap residue can build up. Here’s a simple, low cost way to keep that build up from becoming a problem. You can do this once a month.

1. Run hot water through your sink drains.
2. Add three tablespoons of baking soda, and a little hot water.
3. Let this stand for 20 minutes.
4. Run hot water for a few minutes to flush this down.

You can also use plan, old vinegar to help. Pour a cup of vinegar down your drains. Let it stand for 30 minutes, and rinse thoroughly with hot water. By the way, do you ever get some grass or weeds growing between the cracks of your stones or driveway? Pour or spray some vinegar on those spots, and watch the weeds go away. This is a heckuva lot cheaper than expensive chemical mixes from the hardware store.

Also, some helpful hints for your garbage disposal (They should really change the name…Some people take it too literally.)

1. When operating the disposal, always use cold water.
2. Don’t use commercial grade drain cleaners.
3. Grind up some ice cubes and lemon peels for a fresh smell.
