Gas Conversions – All Electric to Gas and Oil to Gas

With Thomas E. Clark’s 114-years of experience, you can convert your home to natural gas for heat, hot water, cooking, and other applications relatively hassle free.

Let’s walk through the gas conversion process together. There are five easy steps.

Step 1: Let’s determine if natural gas is available to your home.

You probably already know the answer to this question, but it doesn’t hurt to double check. Call 703-941-HEAT or toll-free 888-941-HEAT to convert to natural gas. You will need to provide your name, complete address (including zip code) and phone number. Other pertinent information includes the square footage of your home, the nearest intersecting streets, and what gas appliances you are planning to convert.

Once Washington Gas has obtained this information, they’ll let you know if gas is available and if a payment is required. The basic rule of thumb with Washington Gas and how much they charge to run gas lines to your home is simple: The more gas you plan on using, the less they charge.

Step 2: Let’s determine the best, most efficient equipment for your home.

In order to begin the conversion process, Washington Gas wants to see a copy of a signed contract for the install of your new gas appliance(s). We will detail the number, type and BTU rating of the gas appliances you’ve selected. We’ll also specify what kind of pipe will be used inside your home, and the desired location of the gas meter. If Washington Gas requires a payment, it will need to be sent in with the contract.

Or you can fax your information to Washington Gas at 703-750-4546, Attention: Residential Conversions.

Step 3: The design phase

All gas installations are subject to Washington Gas obtaining the necessary permits and easements. Once Washington Gas receives the required information and permits, they will notify us and proceed with the design and measurement for your gas service installation.

Step 4: Install gas service

Washington Gas will coordinate with the utility locating service to mark the public underground utilities as required by law. You should locate and mark private underground utilities such as sprinkler systems, buried oil tanks or landscape lighting systems prior to service installation. Finally, Washington Gas will schedule the installation of your natural gas service.

Step 5: Install gas meter

Once the installation of the underground line is completed, we will install the interior gas piping, and have it inspected. After your new equipment and piping is installed, you must call Washington Gas at 703-750-1000 to have your natural gas meter installed. Certain appliances may require separate metering (gaslights, pool heaters and back-up generators). This does not apply in most cases.

Here’s the bottom line: We will consult with you for free, and make sure you are comfortable with the entire process. We will walk you through the process, hold your hand the entire way, and take care of everything.

Basically, your biggest role will come in selecting the appliances you want. We will, based on the style you want, give you our best advice on makes and models. For gas furnaces, we absolutely believe American Standard is the cream of the crop. Yet, for gas stoves, or dryers, we know you may have your heart set on a particular brand. For those appliances, we will guide you based on our hands on experience and feedback with our clients…clients who were once in your shoes.

Finally, once the gas conversion is complete, you can really rest easy. Thomas E. Clark has been here for 114-years, and we will continue to be here for you.
